What Causes a Noisy Boiler?

If your boiler is making strange noises, it can be easy to panic and call out a gas engineer for a pricey repair- before you have even considered the cause. Different noises are caused by different problems, and some will require professional help but there are a few things you can try before.

Check your pressure gauge gauge

If the pressure gauge is reading too low, then it can cause your boiler to run incorrectly, which can create noises. To try and correct the issue, top up your boiler pressure using the instructions in your manufacturers' guide. This may be all you need to fix the issue.

Clean your air filter

The air filter for your boiler can become clogged, which can cause noises when air passes through. Some air filters can be removed and cleaned by yourself, which is a quick and easy way to remove any build-up. If this is not the case, a gas engineer can sort the issue for you.

Test your flue

If there is a loud whooshing noise coming from your boiler, it can be caused by a blockage in the flue. This can be detected by covering the flue with your hand and seeing how much air is passing. If there is a blockage, it can be caused by something in the way, which should be easily removable. If there doesn't appear to be anything, you may need to call out a gas engineer to locate a problem further in your system.

Bleed your system

Releasing all of the trapped air from your system can get rid of whistling or kettling sounds, caused by build-up within your system. With no trapped air, your system is free to run more efficiently and flow without interruption, which can eliminate sounds.

Check your circulation pump

If your boiler is making whirring sounds, you may find that your circulation pump is running too quickly. If this is the case, your boiler may have an option to slow down, which will easily solve the issue. If not, you may need to call out a gas engineer.
